The US monetary authority lowered borrowing costs on Wednesday, representing the second reduction in the current year during financial volatility stemming from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.
Move Arrives at Extraordinary Time for Central Bank
The decision to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a span of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under significant strain to cut rates despite ongoing price increases.
Central Bank Announcement Notes Labor Market Shifts
In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the unemployment rate had increased but stays modest. “Employment growth have slowed,” the release reads. “Inflation has moved up and stays moderately high.”
Federal Closure Hinders Fed’s Job
The continuing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of important financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.
Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions
The Federal Reserve typically analyzes labor statistics to assess employment trends, such as the count of new jobs created to the economy and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in the previous month.
The figure of jobs added to the economy in the summer month was down by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and unemployment rose to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.
Private Data Show Ongoing Decline
Though the bureau was scheduled to publish September’s employment data in the start of last month, it halted its publication once the shutdown started. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor reported earlier this month that the business segment eliminated thirty-two thousand positions in last month, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.
“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined significantly,” central bank head Jerome Powell said recently, a trend he had earlier attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.
Price Data Shows Moderate Increase
Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still released its inflation report for last month that indicated that costs are rising, although gradually. Costs increased 3% over the last year, the peak since January. In spring, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
