Whenever a significant honors show nears, one notices an outcry for the addition fresh award types to acknowledge overlooked contributions and fill the hearts of fans with niche passions.
My colleague has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. Equally deserving are board games, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front since similar to blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification supporting my request stands as crucial above others. The demand is this: We need an award type for logic-based games.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and inevitably spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that movie academies don’t do it. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise for the industry of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.
Present Award Structure
Leading game ceremonies currently feature award types recognizing Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these six categories effectively encompass numerous genres, making space possible for most games within them.
Not so for brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Consider three of this year’s best games, showing diverse approaches: building puzzles from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. Which classification works within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.
Recognition Challenges
Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers published annually lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, if they accidentally match for categories like Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested independent game categories.
- A renowned logic title got overlooked for anything in 2014
- A different innovative game was excluded during that ceremony
- Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment in 2021
- Only a few puzzle games barely qualified for niche award types
Value of Brain-Teasers
Frequently they represent small games, yet the craft in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Well-known matching games rank among most engaged experiences in the world and have been for over a decade.
The iconic tile-matching title challenges popular creative games for the title of most purchased experience; it also contends as greatest title ever. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks for gaming as medium, while interacting across multiple categories.
Proposal and Rationale
Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. You could fill a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.
Restating the point, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators operate at the challenging frontier of video game design, developing some of most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Just like film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
